About The Cranio Sacral Society

We are the professional membership association or body that supports CranioSacral Therapists trained by and subsequently qualified through the Upledger Institute International.

We set and maintain standards of qualification and practice in Upledger CranioSacral Therapy in the United Kingdom.

Our Aims

  • We maintain a close awareness of the current requirements for self-regulation of complementary therapies, as well as staying responsive to changes that support or might potentially threaten our work.

  • We set and maintain a Code of Ethics for all practitioners, as well as a Complaints Procedure.

  • We set requirements for ongoing CPD (Continuing Professional Development), ensuring that our Qualified Members maintain their standard of practice. You can find further details on our CPD page here. We also encourage students at all levels to enhance their training by undertaking related courses.

  • We keep our Members updated on new developments in the professional field and in our specific therapy, through our AGM and conference and workshop programme.

  • The Cranio Sacral Society has responsibility for Study Groups, as part of the requirement for Professional Associations to provide a CPD Framework for practitioners, and for Study Group Leaders who run these in order to support students training with the Upledger Institute. In practice, Study Groups are one of the ways CSS works closely in partnership with UIUK.

  • We are here as a link to the public, should anyone be interested in finding out more about the work we do and the Code of Ethics under which we practice, or in verifying the qualification level of a practitioner.

Representation & Recognition of CranioSacral Therapy

We have worked hard for more than 20 years towards self-regulation, and the Cranio Sacral Society is currently recognised by the General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapies (GRCCT).

GRCCT is the largest regulatory body for complementary and alternative therapists in the UK, and provides political representation for us and our members. GRCCT aims to ensure that complementary and alternative therapies have a standard background of education and training, and core principles and ethics from which to work.

The GRCCT has been active in keeping us informed of requirements of the Advertising Standards Agency, and continues to seek recognition for Qualified Therapists within the NHS and Health Insurance companies.

As a Qualified member of the CSS, you are eligible to join GRCCT.

Our Ethics, Rules and Procedures

We believe that both the essence and ethics behind Upledger CranioSacral Therapy are of huge importance to what a practitioner trained in this modality offers. The holding of a therapeutic space with grounded presence that respects the client-centred nature of the approach is vital to what we do.

The Rules and Procedures of the CSS, along with our Articles of Association, are available here for you to read in full.
