<image:title>About The Cranio Sacral Society - Representation & Recognition of CranioSacral Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>We have worked hard for more than 20 years towards self-regulation, and the Cranio Sacral Society is currently recognised by the General Regulatory Council for Complementary Therapies (GRCCT). GRCCT is the largest regulatory body for complementary and alternative therapists in the UK, and provides political representation for us and our members. GRCCT aims to ensure that complementary and alternative therapies have a standard background of education and training, and core principles and ethics from which to work. The GRCCT has been active in keeping us informed of requirements of the Advertising Standards Agency, and continues to seek recognition for Qualified Therapists within the NHS and Health Insurance companies. As a Qualified member of the CSS, you are eligible to join GRCCT.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is Cranio Sacral Therapy? - Every client is unique</image:title>
<image:caption>One person’s migraine headaches will be caused by something different from someone else’s. Upledger CST treats all sorts of different things that people bring - we treat people not conditions! By working with gentle techniques on areas indicated by the evaluation, the underlying problem often shows. This is a different approach from many healthcare treatments. We do not just treat symptoms. We are likely to be getting in touch with the source of those symptoms.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>What is Cranio Sacral Therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>As a therapist progresses through this training they develop skills of holding a therapeutic conversation or dialogue, enabling them to help their client through deeper processes. Even the conversation or dialogue is linked to subtle changes in the client’s body, so at all stages the client is in charge and their inner intelligence, sometimes referred to as their Inner Physician or Inner Wisdom, is leading the session, and guiding the therapist. The therapist develops skills of listening with their hands while maintaining a safe and neutral environment for the client. The training to be able to do this, to hold this therapeutic space, is challenging and inspiring. Working with clients, for whom we are often a ‘last resort’ also has its challenges. Chronic issues are often brought to the therapist, who, using the evaluation already described might just be able to locate and treat the root of the problem. To the client it can seem like a miracle, but the therapist learns ways of explaining the way Upledger CST works so that the client is able to own the process.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is Cranio Sacral Therapy? - The Practitioner's Journey</image:title>
<image:caption>The CSS gives an Upledger trained therapist a valuable resource, through Study Group leaders, experienced colleagues and the Board Members themselves who are available to guide and support them gently along their journey through the work. We understand the unique nature of this therapy, and the specific needs of therapists as they progress through their training and professional life. Throughout the training, the student moves from learning a great deal about the body, to practising the work and gaining understanding, and through receiving treatment themselves, to embodying it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Study Groups - Study Groups: An integral part of the Upledger training and experience</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 2004, the CSS has been responsible for Study Groups, which are run by Qualified Members. Study Groups exist to support all levels of Upledger students, and are especially helpful to those newer to the work between their classes. They are held in various locations across the UK at different times to suit the Study Group leader and their Study Group best. Some Study Group Leaders offer online meetings. You can find a list of them further down this page as well as on the UIUK website with a calendar of their next dates. Some students are members of more than one group, and many who find travelling difficult are able to take advantage of online meetings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Study Groups - An opportunity to deepen your understanding</image:title>
<image:caption>Upledger Institutes worldwide, and their Study Group Leaders will not chase you to encourage your participation. You are expected to be self-responsible and to take the initiative to contact Study Group Leaders and get on their mailing list so you can keep in touch about dates and meeting times. Occasionally Study Group Leaders will invite Upledger teachers or experienced practitioners to present a session around a particular topic. These have included theory and practical exercises to enable a greater understanding of particular techniques, preparation for written and practical examinations, or aspects of the role of the therapist. There have also been longer workshops, CST1 & 2 reviews, SER1 and 2 reviews, and various Anatomy days. Please note that it is very important that only Upledger CranioSacral Therapy is covered at these groups. It is neither the place of the Study Group Leader, nor of other students to promote or spend time discussing other modalities, products, or approaches they may use, or indeed any other classes or sessions they may offer separately. When this has occurred on the odd occasion in the past it has left students feeling quite confused. Please contact CSS if this should occur.</image:caption>

I qualified as an Acupuncturist in 1999 and after 10 years decided the time was right to study CST. I had discovered it as a student and found it to be the only treatment that consistently improved my pain levels caused by an accident in a gymnastics class as a teenager. As I progressed through the training, I came to realise the breadth and unlimited possibilities CST offers to people. To experience it is to believe it! And the profound change it can offer is a tremendous resource for so many people with a wide variety of life stories intertwining the physical and emotional. I qualified in 2019 and treat a variety of complaints for babies, children and adults. If I'm not in clinic, I'll be walking on the South Downs, cycling along the coast or swimming in the sea!</image:caption>

I have been practising CST since 2012 and became Techniques certified in 2018, and then Diplomate certified in 2023. I have always wanted to be some sort of therapist to help others overcome limitations. Studying Physiotherapy (2001) and gaining amaster’s degree in Manual Therapy (2005), gave me a very good understanding of pain mechanisms, functional movement and rehabilitation. The need to explore more about myself and to deepen my awareness of physical-mental- emotional connections led me to CST, which has changed my practice so much! It has also proven to me that personal and professional development goes hand in hand! I am a mobile therapist offering home visits in South East London incorporating CST and Physiotherapy. <image:caption>Whitstable • Kent 07866 939063 keithadavies1@gmail.com craniokeith.co.uk QUALIFIED My journey to become a healthcare practitioner started at the age of eighteen when I sustained a serious injury as a result of a motorcycle accident. The final stages of my recovery were effectively aided by sessions of Alexander Technique. Thus began my interest in complementary health care in general and physical therapies in particular. It was not until about thirteen years later, at a time of great upheaval in my life, that I acquired the opportunity to study Classical Osteopathy. This therapy emphasises the uniqueness of each individual, and the inter-connectivity of all of the parts that contribute to the whole person, as well as the fundamental principle that change cannot be imposed but should be intelligently encouraged with the minimum intervention necessary. After four years of full-time study, at the age of thirty-seven, I graduated in 1999 with a Diploma in Osteopathy. Since then, I have worked as an independent physical therapist treating a broad range of conditions and age groups. I began studying Upledger CranioSacral Therapy part time in 2012 and discovered that this remarkable discipline further refined the fundamental principles of my core practice, as well as adding to them the concept that each body actually has the innate ability to direct sensitively applied treatment so that it can have maximum therapeutic effect. Since then, I have used my CranioSacral knowledge and skills both within my core practice and also purely as CranioSacral Therapy, with gratifying results. I qualified as an Upledger CranioSacral Therapist in 2022. I believe that the broad range of life events and in particular some of the trauma I have contended with, combined with approaching a quarter of a century of experience working as a therapist, enable me to offer a genuinely empathic client-centred service.</image:caption>

After a few treatments, I began to notice improvement in her movement and how positively my daughter was reacting to her CST treatments. I then decided to book a treatment for myself and I began to experience the benefits of CST treatments in helping to maintain my own overall well being. I have always had an affinity towards dogs and currently have two myself. After witnessing the benefits of CST treatments on my own dogs, I decided to become a fully qualified Canine CST therapist. I believe that dogs deserve to benefit from the same gentle non invasive CST treatments as we do, to help improve their overall well being. My journey with horses began at the age of 5, when I sat on a pony for the very first time and instantly fell in love with riding and horses. I was extremely lucky to then go onto have lessons and eventually share a pony at 8 years old. Since then they have remained a huge part of my life and I decided that I wanted to have a career working and being around horses. I worked in a livery yard of 38 horses, eventually working my way up to become yard manager. Whilst I working in the yard I studied and passed the exams to become a qualified BHS Riding instructor. It is here that I was able to work and teach people and horses with different abilities, in various disciplines. Currently, I am working with horses from many disciplines, from competition horses, ex racehorses, happy hackers, unridden horses to children’s ponies and Donkeys as well as their human owners.</image:caption>

I offer treatments from my home in a suburb of Woking, Surrey. In 2008 I made a decision to radically change direction in my work life, or risk damaging my health, due to prolonged stress in a highly pressurised job. I retrained as a Massage Therapist and have never looked back. I quickly realised this was just the start of an ongoing journey working with the wonders and complexities of the human body and mind. I went on to complete a BTEC Level 6 in Advanced Clinical and Sports Massage with the Jing Institute of Massage in 2012. I then did further training with Myofascial Release UK, before starting my journey with CranioSacral Therapy & Upledger in 2014. I was curious about this gentle, yet powerful therapy, and my curiosity has only increased over the years as I continue to develop my skills as a therapist to ensure I am doing the very best I can for my clients. I absolutely love my work – it is a vocation for me. When I’m not working, my husband and I like to go hiking and cold water swimming. I also love running, climbing, bees, and I especially enjoy spending time gardening, with the assistance of my feline friend. Physiotherapist at Bath University in 1994, and always loved a hands-on approach to treatments for my clients in many different hospital departments. As the years have gone by I have become increasingly interested in light touch, and qualified as a Bowen Therapist in 2014. Acupuncture and Bowen Therapy are so useful in helping palliative care patients in the hospice setting, and for friends and family. I set up my Clinic, Cornerstone Therapies, at home in 2014 and the demand for treatments grew quickly through word of mouth. I also studied Scar Work, which is wonderful for those with scars from surgeries or injuries. Eventually in 2023 I committed myself to the Craniosacral training, which had been calling me for years! CST has opened up so many more avenues of treatment for my clients. I really love this approach, and my clients do too! CST has really helped me develop as a therapist, and to be aware of so much more happening within my clients bodies and minds. I have seen some beautiful outcomes from this work, for myself, and for my clients too. Sometimes I do purely CST sessions, and other times I might incorporate other modalities to help my client. It all depends on the person and what they want or need. I treat lots of backs, necks, shoulders and other joints, injuries, post-surgical conditions/complications, but also things like digestive or hormonal issues, headaches, temperomandibular problems, and issues relating to the nervous system and to the post-covid years. I am very grateful for this journey, and for where this work has taken me. I love my job, and I’m always learning new and amazing things from my clients and this work. CST rocks!</image:caption>

As an experienced Physiotherapist I am well used to treating pain and analysing movement. Teaching Pilates has deepened the connection between my own mind and body and given me a wonderful repertoire of exercises to help my clients stay healthy and fit. I came across CranioSacral Therapy (CST) in 2014 when studying a whole-body approach for Physiotherapy assessment. I realised then, that I didn’t have sufficient skills to treat the CranioSacral System (the bones, soft tissues and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord) or help with the emotional component of chronic pain. Studying all the core Upledger courses and qualifying in CST has really been the missing piece in my practice. I am committed to lifelong learning and am always updating my knowledge through reflection, attending further courses and study groups. When I’m not working, I love to cook healthy food and then work it off by playing tennis or wild swimming! You are very welcome to come and see me in Southampton where I run my own practice from home. Some people come for the profound benefits CST offers to their well-being; others like to combine the gentle techniques of CST with an exercise program, manual therapy or Physiotherapy advice.</image:caption>

It’s a fascinating time to be working in the field of Craniosacral Therapy with new scientific research data becoming available which will help pave the way for it to become more widely understood, respected and accepted in the world of healthcare.” In addition to Craniosacral Therapy, Massage and Reflexology, Sophie loves yoga, regularly playing tennis and padel, scuba diving, skiing, adventure and travelling the world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Barnstaple • Devon 07973 758230 hevpog@hotmail.co.uk www.octopuscst.co.uk QUALIFIED I first discovered CST in 2004 when I met a new instructor, Maggie Gill, on a Yoga Teacher Training course in Brighton. I was fascinated by this gentle, yet profoundly deep healing and found that it fitted well with the ‘Scaravelli’ approach to Yoga I was studying at the time. Over the past 20 years I have taken many Upledger modules, deepening my knowledge and understanding of this powerful approach. This involves ‘walking the talk’ and doing my own work to ensure I’m able to maintain a safe space for my clients to work through their own healing process. Among some of the courses I have studied are: Paediatrics; Conception, Pregnancy & Birthing; CST Beyond the Matrix; The Immune Response; Unwinding Meridians; The Brain Speaks; Somato-Emotional Release and the Inner Physician; and Advanced 1 and 2. I gained my CST-Techniques qualification in 2019, and am currently studying Transactional Analysis, adding ‘Trainee Counsellor’ to my toolbox. I am passionate about this work and have a broad client base from newborns to the elderly. If you would like to know more, please feel free to contact me.</image:caption>

Originally qualifying as a physio in 1993, I also teach pilates and practice acupuncture. I am grateful to work alongside my husband and an amazing team in a renovated chapel on the outskirts of Durham – converting it into a beautiful physio, health and wellness centre. I have trained with Upledger up to Advanced level and have taken many further courses, including paediatrics, to gain more knowledge and facilitate my wonderful client base. I have been privileged to assist on the intensive community training programmes a few times and now assist on some courses. I am now excited to begin the process towards diplomate level and help take the work and wisdom ofcraniosacral forwards. <image:caption>Portreath • Cornwall 07837 730759 wabisabi1969@gmail.com QUALIFIED I have been practicing complementary therapy since 1998, qualifying as a Sports Massage Therapist, adding Aromatherapy, Reiki and Seated Acupressure to my tool bag in my quest to find effective treatments. CST found me in 2004, when I received treatment for long-standing back pain. (I have fallen off a lot of horses….). For the first time since childhood I was completely pain free. I was hooked!! I have trained to the Advanced 1 level, including the paediatric modules. This profound treatment, which respects and complements all others, dots the “i’s” and crosses the “t’s” for me. After many years of working in clinic situations, I now practice from home in Portreath. My client base ranges from newborns to the elderly, athletes to post- surgery patients, treating anything from colic to whiplash and a myriad of conditions in between. I am fortunate to have an amazing network of colleagues in Cornwall and so, in a choice of venues across the county, we are able to offer “multi – hands” treatments. This option can be indicated where you feel that you have got “stuck” on your journey towards good health. The extra pairs of hands give additional support to the tissues and emotions of the patient on the couch. Until I make better friends with technology, for more information or an appointment, you can reach me on my mobile.</image:caption>

My philosophy is 'back to basics' - my belief is simply that you already have the ability and inner resources to permanently and radically change and enhance your life. My experience with Craniosacral Therapy has led me to believe that it is one of the most profound and gentle healing modalities. Over the years I've worked professionally with clients on an individual basis and with groups, as well as within the public and private sectors, including corporate, voluntary, charitable and community organisations. With a Degree in Adult Nursing, I also have extensive experience working as a therapist and nurse in palliative and cancer care. My complementary and integrative therapy training has included learning many different healing modalities. I've learned and gratefully received teachings from some of the best in their field. Everything I've learned has influenced both my professional and personal life, and have deepened my personal and spiritual belief that we are all connected, and that a conscious, mindful and heart-based way of life is the only peaceful way forward. It has been and continues to be an amazing journey for me - long may it continue.</image:caption>

I have studied various therapies over the years to facilitate a client’s own integration of their body, mind and spirit. With a background in massage and kinesiology that started in 1995, my enthusiasm and my holistic approach to my work, has led me to become a Craniosacral therapist with the Techniques certification. CST has helped me in so many ways, such as completely clearing up a chronic digestive issue that I had experienced for 5 years. As well as helping with back pain and neck problems that I had accumulated in a past career as a metalwork designer/maker, CST is also a continuing journey of discovery. It has helped me to integrate life experiences and so open up to life. I have found that I am a lot more present in my body and this helps me to live life more fully. I have facilitated craniosacral study groups for Upledger students to practice techniques, and I keep up to date with the latest developments by attending study days, workshops and by regularly assisting on Upledger training programs. I have also volunteered at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, where myself and other CST therapists offered multi hands sessions to people who were at the end of life and receiving palliative care. Being dedicated in my practice, I am now in the process of studying for a Diplomat in CST. As I really enjoy working in CST multi hands therapy sessions, and see the many benefits that client’s experience, I also work with Nikki Kenward at her clinic in Marlow fortnightly. I am fully insured, and am a qualified member of the Craniosacral Society.</image:caption>

What drew me to this work is how gentle yet deeply effective it is. CranioSacral Therapy allows the body to unwind and release stored tension in such a subtle, intelligent way. Typically, I was on the phone for long periods of time and I developed a neck problem. A massage therapist, who was helping me with this, asked me if she could try some CranioSacral Therapy at the end of one of my treatments. I agreed, not knowing what it was or what to expect. That was it! Profound, quite astonishing, and certainly like nothing I had ever experienced. From that moment on I was hooked and in total wonderment of this gentle, powerful therapy. What was it? How does it work? I needed to know more. I left the City that year and decided to become a CranioSacral Therapist. I have since undertaken many years of training, both in the UK and in America, including Advanced Work and Paediatrics and even working with clients in the water with Dolphins. I have taken my Upledger Techniques Certification Exams and I am a Qualified member of the Cranio Sacral Society. I shall always be indebted to that wonderful lady and her hands, and for her introducing me to this extraordinary work. I now practice in Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, and treatments in your own home can also be arranged.</image:caption>
